In February 2018, the first cannabis dispensary in Texas opened its doors, one of three expected to open this year, making medical cannabis oil also known as CBD oil available to patients with complex epilepsy. Families who have been managing epilepsy with multiple procedures and medications have been awaiting CBD oil as an alternative treatment since Governor Greg Abbott passed the Compassionate Use Act in 2015, allowing neurologists and epileptologists to prescribe CBD oil to people with epilepsy when other treatments have not worked.
