Child Neurology Consultants of Austin’s Dr. Karen Keough recently stopped by KXAN’s Studio 512 program to discuss epilepsy in recognition of November’s National Epilepsy Awareness Month.
Dr. Keough is a board-certified pediatric neurologist and epileptologist, which means she specializes in evaluating epilepsy. In the interview, she broke down the different types of seizures and how a chronic history of seizures can lead to a diagnose of this particular neurologic condition affecting the brain and nervous system.
Epilepsy is diagnosed by studying a child’s history of seizures and monitoring the brain’s activity when one occurs.
Dr. Keough explained how Child Neurology Consultants of Austin is now offering an innovative in-home video EEG monitoring technology for patients so that their brains can be evaluated when a seizure takes place while remaining in the comfort of their own home instead of a hospital. The remote monitoring is a convenience and comfort for families and also extends their services to patients in more rural communities who do not have a hospital with an epilepsy monitoring unit nearby.
Dr. Keough said there are approximately 500,000 cases of epilepsy in Texas alone, and chances are, everyone knows someone who is affected by it.
