Congratulations to all our patients who recently graduated high school! To those who are heading off to college, we want to make sure you have the same quality care that we always strive to provide you at Pediatrix Child Neurology Consultants of Austin.
For migraine sufferers, this debilitating condition unfortunately often extends into adulthood after the teenage and adolescent years.
Migraines may even become exacerbated when first away from home due to stress, anxiety, poor eating or sleeping habits, or newfound academic and social pressures.
Once at school, we want to make sure that you can access proper migraine treatment. We offer convenient telehealth appointments for continuity of care for our patients. In addition, all colleges typically have student health centers, and many of them now offer dedicated migraine care and even academic accommodations for those who experience chronic migraines that may interfere with schoolwork.
The National Headache Foundation recently established Migraine University to provide resources for college students and guidance in obtaining accommodations.
If you’d like to bring with you an official migraine diagnosis to school to ensure that you receive proper medical attention and possible academic accommodations, please contact our office. Our team of board-certified pediatric neurologists and headache and migraine specialists will do everything we can to set you up for success when you are away from home.
In addition to bringing your diagnosis with you, here are other tips to help with migraine preparedness and safety while at college:
- Have your medications mailed to you regularly from home or coordinate automated deliveries from your registered pharmacy
- Pack copies of your medical records and insurance card, or prepare digital copies of everything, to access easily anytime while at school
- Find a local headache and migraine specialist once you are settled to reach out to if necessary
- Create an emergency plan and share with your roommate, or dorm monitor, that you suffer from migraines and how they can help you or who to contact in the event of an emergency
As always, our headache and migraine specialists are here to help in any way possible upon transitioning to this next and exciting phase of life as a college student.
