EEG Studies

Child Neurology Consultants of Austin offers four types of electroencephalogram (EEG) studies that may be ordered by your provider.

Types of EEG Studies:

  • Routine EEG: This study is performed by the CNCA technician in the clinic. Your CNCA physician will read the results of this specialized study and provide recommendations. The in-office procedure often takes about one hour, and results are available within one to two business days.
  • Ambulatory EEG: This study will start in our clinic. Our CNCA technician will set up the study in the office. The study will continue while you take your child home for 24 to 72 hours. Your CNCA physician will read the results of this specialized study. Results are available within one week.
  • In-Home video EEG: This study is set up by a CNCA technician in your home with electrodes, leads, and cameras. This study allows for your child to sleep in their own bed while the video monitoring collects data for 24 to 72 hours.   • Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU): This hospital-based study takes place at either Dell Children’s Medical Center or North Austin Medical Center. A CNCA physician will be part of your child’s care team while at the hospital. This study is ordered based on the medical necessity of your child’s condition for real-time video analysis during an EEG. This study is performed in the hospital setting for one to seven days and results are available prior to discharge.
