Tuberous Sclerosis Program
Learning that your child has tuberous sclerosis (TSC) can be overwhelming. We’re here to help.
Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in various organs of the body such as the brain, skin, heart, eyes, kidneys, and lungs. Almost all of these tumors are benign (not cancerous), but they can cause health problems or learning disabilities. Because the condition is rare and has several other complexities to it, it is best to see a specialist who is experienced with treating TSC.
Expert Care for Children With TSC
The TSC Program at Child Neurology & Consultants of Austin offers specialized care for children diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis while also helping to guide the patient and connect them with other medical specialists familiar with this condition.
Dr. Karen Keough, program director for the TSC Program at Child Neurology & Consultants of Austin, has been serving the TSC community in Austin for more than a decade. She also serves on the advisory board for the TS Alliance, a national organization working to find a cure for this condition. Dr. Keough is well known for spearheading best TSC practices and coordinating research opportunities in collaboration with the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. She also founded Austin’s first comprehensive Tuberous Sclerosis Center in Austin. Before then, there was no “one place” for TSC patients to get connected to specialists with special knowledge of TSC.
Dr. Keough is passionate about helping and supporting the TSC community. The family is the most important part of every child’s care team. That’s why we work closely to provide extra support for you and your child including connecting families with other parents whose children have TSC through our Patient Ambassador Program.
