Dawn K. McElvain, APRN, CPNP
Nurse Practitioner
Dawn graduated with a bachelor of social work from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000. She worked for several years with at-risk youth, pregnant teens, and child survivors of physical and sexual abuse before returning to the University of Texas to pursue her nursing degree.
As a registered nurse, Dawn worked at Dell Children’s Medical Center in the intermediate and intensive care units, caring for children with a variety of acute and critical illnesses. She completed her master of science in nursing, graduating with honors from the UT Austin pediatric nurse practitioner program in 2010.
Dawn has worked in pediatric neurology since 2010, evaluating and treating children with a broad range of neurological diagnoses, including epilepsy, migraines, cerebral palsy, ADHD, autism, concussion and brain injury, and neuromuscular disorders. Currently, she assists with the Neonatal Neurology Program, caring for premature infants and other neonates with neurological conditions in the NICU setting. She is also clinical faculty and an online instructor at UT Arlington School of Nursing, as well as an adjunct clinical affiliate to the UT-Austin School of Nursing, serving as a lead clinical preceptor and guest lecturer for the pediatric nurse practitioner program.
Dawn lives in central Austin with her husband and two sons. Dawn is an avid road and trail runner who can be found most mornings running on the Ladybird Lake Trail, training for her next ultramarathon.
